Liquidnet In Rwanda

There are many other examples of charitable works driven by Wall Street employees. Check out the amazing work that global electronic marketplace Liquidnet is doing in Rwanda, where it’s the primary corporate partner developing the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV), an innovative concept to help traumatized orphans caught in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Liquidnet Holdings, the New York City-based financial technology company, partnered with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a non-sectarian International Development Program, to develop a village and high school to help children who are orphans of the Rwandan genocide.
Based on an Israeli model that initially served orphans from the Holocaust, the ASYV is a response to the 1994 Rwandan genocide and the first project to bring the concept of a youth village to Africa, according to the company. Agozo means “a place where tears are dried” and Shalom means “peace.”
Opened on Dec. 17, 2008, the village has two parts: a communal residence and learning environment, which is expected to eventually house 500 youth and graduate 125 high school students. Liquidnet High School is already open. The founder/visionary is Anne Heyman, an attorney, who is also CEO Seth Merrin’s wife. Heyman’s blogs can be read by clicking here.
According to Liquidet’s Web site, Employees and their families have supported the ASYV in various ways, by going there to build an Internet wireless network in the rural village, to raising supplies for donation to taking part in a New York City Triathlon to raise awareness. Over 30 employees have traveled directly to Rwanda to help in the project, while hundreds more have volunteered from the office, notes the firm.
